Sambuca di Sicilia - my 3 day 'no beach' sabbitical in a village town in Sicily
It was a true delight to have discovered this place, Sambuca di Sicilia, which was led purely by the accommodation. I had found this apartment on my phone search before arriving and fell in love so I booked it. This is one of those examples of booking something that I know I want to stay at in advance and I plan the trip around making sure I get there. I knew nothing about this town, just that it was very small and remote. It became one of the most special parts of the trip as I had a few solo days between adventures with friends to just cook at home, read my books and aimlessly wander this magic town filled with history, culture and the BEST pistachio baked good of my life - I went three times every day.
I don’t think I saw a person under the age of 40 (which I adore!) and you will find the town quiet and empty for most of the day, with a little buzz during the morning espresso meet and dinner time. Nonetheless it is rich in kind people and the produce, like always, is second to none. I HIGHLY recommend this place if you are wanting to wind down and immerse yourself in an off-the-beaten-track place that will fill your cup up ten times over.
My recommendation list may not be long for Sambuca as I truly stayed in town and ventured only to Planeta winery between my naps and book reads, cooking nearly entirely at home and frequenting the same coffee shop every morning - but nonetheless everything you will see in this town will be special and completely authentic. One trip to the local deli/market for dinner resulted in the only things I could find worthy of throwing together a meal that was not pasta. Going for chicken schnitzel, lettuce and zucchini to which I shredded the lettuce and had with parsley from the garden, olive oil, balsamic and and some parmesan, then I fried the zucchini off in some olive oil (from the Planeta winery) lemon and salt and served those next to my crispy chicken shchnitty for dinner looking out the window and seeing the nightly routine of the village township starting at 10pm - just as I was winding down for sleep.
For where I stayed, ate and frolicked it, see below
