When you read prior to arriving that Aphrodite, the goddess of LOVE was born on Kythira Island and therefore the high level aspect of beauty is expected to see and experience. So pals I can confirm, so it was! Mountains, tiny villages, helpful people and exceptional beaches - classic Greece.
It has a few spellings so you may see it as Kythira, Kythera and Cythera - all are the same island that sits under the southern tip of the Peloponnese peninsula. The initial selection of this island was from my travel compadre Bella, who had a friend from this island and she had always promised him a visit - so now he gets two crazies for the price of one.
We had just finished 4 days moving and beaching through the Mani Peninsula (which is more West) and so we had 7 days to explore Kythira and honestly what a damn treat! We woke up a few mornings on one side of the island in front of the olive groves and the next few mornings with the sea crashing 8 metres from our little beach shack built on the red sand. Shall we talk about no electricity/off grid experience? Let’s see how I feel later when I’m typing.
At the bottom are links and names to where we stayed, places we ate at and beaches we swum our little souls in. I HIGHLY recommend adding Kythira to your list as it has the right amount of relaxing, socialising, eating and moving about without the fuss. We took our car we hired from the Athens airport across on the boat from the Neapolis port to Kythira and I would suggest doing this as cars are pricier to hire on the island and not as available. In terms of how long to say, 5 to 7 days would allow you to explore, experience and relax into the way of life but then again, I could stay anywhere like that for at least 3 months. Couldn’t you!?
en-JOY!
With love, chaos & rigatoni,
